This weekend Cheer Up was BACK at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern for another double helping of "Fun, Love & CHEER". First up on Friday 6th September we was joined by the one and only Nicki French who celebrated with us 30 years since the release of her worldwide smash hit, "Total eclipse of the heart". Nicki delivered an outstanding set featuring singles from across those thirty years including the hits from her Mike Stock & Matt Aitken debut album "Secrets" including "For all we know", "Did you ever really love me?" and "Is there anybody out there?". Nicki also performed tracks from her brand new album "Who, What, Where?". It has been ten years since we first had Nicki join us at Cheer Up and this show was one of her best..
Nicki was followed on Saturday 7th September by Cheer Up's "Deuce on the loose" party, celebrating the re-issue of Deuce's "Deuce on the loose" album with all four members of Deuce, Craig, Kelly, Lisa and Paul joining us for this historic event at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. The event included a conversation with Deuce before all members did a meet and greet with people who attended the event. 35 years since the release of "Safe in the arms of love" Cheer Up joins Roger to chat Shooting party, Stock Aitken Waterman & Sonia
CU: Hi Roger thank you for joining us at Cheer Up Chats, how are you and how has life been in recent times?
RF: I'm well thanks, keeping fit. After my happy time at PWL, I worked for Richard Branson at Virgin before moving on after the sad demise of the Megastores, to working the corporate life in global recruitment. No more singing for me, just listening to loads still.
CU: We create events celebrating the music of Stock Aitken Waterman & PWL, can you tell us about your time in Shooting party with Gary, how did the duo come about?
RF: Gary & I were in a rock band called No Dice in the late 70’s/80’s, we made 3 albums, toured the world and had quite a good degree of success too. Around this time we were really interested in the new stuff that was coming out of SAW studios. You Spin Me Round was an incredible record and we wanted some of that. It was really exciting and new and fresh and the tunes just kept on coming, we just loved it.
CU: You worked with Phil Harding, Ian Curnow, Pete Hammond, what was it like being part of the PWL Hit factory, and being around Stock Aitken Waterman? did you record any tracks with Stock Aitken Waterman?
RF: Gary and I would be outside the studio’s every morning and would hand a demo to Pete (Waterman) when he arrived for work. After about three weeks of doing this we were eventually invited in and just became part of the family. We were put to work with Ian & Phil (later with Pete Hammond for "Let’s Hang On") and "Safe in the Arms of Love" was conceived.
SAW were busy with Kylie, Rick, Bananrama etc and we were quite content working with Ian & Phil who were not only top musicians but lovely, lovely people. Everyone from the staff on reception (Shazza) to Pete, Mike and Matt, we felt accepted into the family. Have to say Mel & Kim were tops too.
CU: You was part of the Hit factory roadshows in 1989/1990 as well as interviewing Sonia for her Everybody knows video collection, can you tell us about those?
RF: Yes, those roadshows were magic, I used to present some of them too later on when Pete couldn’t be there. We were very used to touring but the other acts were new to it so we looked after them. I met Sonia on the first tour and became friends immediately, I only vaguely remember the Everybody Knows videos, so thanks for reminding me, a lot, lot of fun was had.
CU: So we can imagine you got to know quite a lot of the artists on the roadshows, TV shows etc, can you tell us about that?
RF: I did get to know everyone on the tour very well. London Boys, Johnny O, Kakko, Sinitta, Reynolds girls, Big Fun lads, Pause 4 Thought and of course Jason, Kylie & Sonia. Wonderful, happy, funny times but there’s an old saying ‘What goes on the tour, stays on the tour’ haha!
CU: Tank you Roger so much for chatting with us.
RF: It’s been an absolute pleasure Mario and Julian. Those days at PWL, the people who worked there, the artists I met and Mike, Matt & Pete were the happiest of times for me

The Fizz - Everything Under The Sun -
Review
The fourth album from The Fizz and Mike Stock have once again produced something rather special with its gorgeous artwork, the album features ten bops, its pop culture in 35 minutes which has been worth the wait, here's our track by track review.
I wonder where you are? 3.5/5
Press play and the album opener transports you way back before the iconic Stock Aitken Waterman era of the 1980's but that of the 60'sand 70's with this track not sounding to dissimilar to the early Beatles sound with Mike Nolan taking lead vocals gives us a tinge of the Monkees (Daydream believer) as you can hear the smile as he sings along this 3 minute bop.
Everything we do (We do it for you) 3.5/5
Another song, another standout intro and its only track two, if you was to put all ten intros from this album, back to back and played "Guess the track" you'll be scoring ten out of ten after a number of listens, the sheer volumes of sounds and hooks this album possess is outstanding with this track intro being used as the albums teasers during its promo.
Written back in the early 1990's by Mike Stock & Pete Waterman, Everything we do (we do it for you) features Mike Nolan on lead on this 80's soft rock banger which screams Route 66 and driving along with the sun on your face and wind in your hair with a chorus that steps up a gear or two with Cheryl and Jay harmonising beautifully in their Fizz-Wood Mac-Esq tones.
A true heart 4/5
The intro to this wouldn't sound out of place on Princess 1986 Princess album and just like that you are transported back to that era. Mike Nolan takes lead on this cute downtempo tale of "True heart" and yet 80's in production (The biggest nod to Stock Aitken Waterman era), lyrically it reminds me of Mike Stock storytelling from the Love This era.
When is our luck gonna change 3.5/5
"Its not about singing the blues" and this co-wrote Jay Aston track has Jay, Cheryl and Mike all take lead as the track punches into a catchy chorus with the song taking pride of place on the album.
I close my eyes 5/5
An album highlight as the piano keys introduce this pop, ballad, almost euphoric classical banger, "I close my eyes and dancing with you", Jay recalls, yes please lets dance to this on loop as we reminisce about "Summer nights", emotional. Top class.
Treasure forever 5/5
Another intro and this one evokes with its simple twinkles and transport you back to being ten years old and listening to the radio at night in the late 80's (though really you should of been in bed sleeping) its emotive and that's before the singing begins. For an album to have three or four stand out favourites is a rare find but once again Cheryl, Jay, Mike and Mike Stock have smashed it. "We stand, we fall as one, we face it together", biographical to 40 plus year of the band, of friendship and "Being together" THANK YOU for sharing.
You can find it here 4.5/5
You can almost imagine Mike Stock putting this together in the bunker back in 1987, a class act, well produced and something you could of imagined The Fizz (Bucks Fizz) releasing back in the day with Stock Aitken Waterman with its hooks and polished production.
Pretty soon 5/5
This is where The Fizz/Mike Stock work beautifully, while you can be bopping away to something not to dissimilar of a Bananarama classic, next minute you find yourself in James Taylor territory. Jay takes lead on this 3 minute story telling, beautifully done as you feel the emotion upon each key change which takes the listener on a journey of tears and smiles, a firm favourite. Outstanding.
I'm on my way (Better run) 4/5
Another 80's FIZZ-SAW-CLE influenced intro which transports you back to those days. Its a Fizz-Mike Stock-Fleetwood Mac Mashup which featured highly in the groups previous album, "Smoke & Mirrors" and continues to shine on "Everything under the sun".
This one 5/5
On first listen of Everything under the sun this cover was close to taking the crown as the album favourite, its a bop with Mike Nolan taking the lead which leads into a belter of a pop chorus yet with other magical moments popping up along the way including Pretty soon, Treasure forever and I close my eyes, "This one" has the knowledge of being at the top alongside outstanding company on what is a perfect album full of emotion, warmth and fun, just the tonic.
